Roots Manuva Meets Wrongtom - Jah Warriors feat. Ricky Ranking
Roots Manuva returns dropping the righteousness. The only brand new track from the forthcoming Roots Manuva meets Wrongtom project, “Duppy Writer,” “Jah Warriors” is a low-ended, bumping reggae-hip hop jam which sees Roots himself running through a host of lyrical styles and themes sounding as fresh and as fired up as he has in ages. Meanwhile, the one and only Ricky Ranking adds some soundsystem sweetness pon de chorus. The basic music for “Jah Warriors” was written and assembled by Mr Manuva. When he had something he liked, he handed it over to Wrongtom who re-worked the drums to fit with the rest of the project and added enough warm bass to really make the tune bounce. The results are dynamite – a tune which sounds simultaneously classic and utterly contemporary.
The package is rounded out by “Bashment Bogle,” a sparse stepper based on the classic “Bashment Boogie” (and completely exclusive to this single), and “Rebuff” – a digi-club re-work of last year’s “Buff Nuff”.
Warm, funny, infectiously danceable, “Duppy Writer” reveals Roots Manuva as one of the most compelling voices in the last two decades of British music. It also makes you smile. What else are you after?

DELS - Shapeshift
Welcome please, to the world of Kieren Dickens aka DELS. The young MC has been creating a buzz ever since John Peel heard him as a teenager and put him on the radio. Now he’s ready to re-write the rules of rap in the UK in a way that hasn’t happened for years.
“Shapeshift” is a perfect place to start. The beat is courtesy of long-time collaborator Joe Goddard, better known for his work as part of Hot Chip. Goddard hooks up some ultra-squelchy, off-kilter electronic madness (as well as dropping in to deliver a poker-faced middle 8). Over it, DELS does what he does best, in this case taking us back to a childhood in which his biggest dream was to be able to turn into something else. It’s a proper recollection of childhood, its fears and well as its fun, not one of those fake lists of vintage products like Raleigh Grifters. DELS slams it out in a clear voice which shows the influence of Grime, while the cleverness of his punch lines and metaphors show he ain’t kowtowing to any of the many cliches of the form.
Remixes come from a wide range of sources. Kwes is another producer intimately involved with the creation of DELS’ forthcoming album and here he builds a tower of eccentric stabs around the vocal, a carnival procession of aural imagination. The hotly-tipped Ghostape, on the other hand, breaks the vocal down into its constituent elements for a delicate future-World rhythm session. Eli T and Dels himself then turn the original into a reggaefied wobbler. And if that weren’t enough, a Micachu remix and revox is due soon.

Toddla T - Sky Surfing feat. Wayne Marshall
Toddla T comes absolutely busting out of the traps for his very first single for Ninja Tune/Girls Music. On a recent trip to Jamaica to collaborate with Major Lazer, Mr T found himself alone in the legendary Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston. Who should wander in but the one-and-only Wayne Marshall who asked Toddla to play him some rhythms. As soon as he heard the beat which would become 'Sky Surfing' he told the Sheffield whizz kid to hit RECORD.

Eskmo 'Cloudlight'

Brendan Angelides, a native of Connecticut now based in San Francisco, has been causing a considerable stir for the last few years, releasing music on labels including but not limited to Warp, Planet Mu and his own Ancestor imprint. Already tipped by many in the electronic music community to be a major presence for years to come, Eskmo shows exactly what the fuss is all about on his debut for his new home-label.
'Cloudlight' somehow manages to rope together the aesthetics of glitch, dubstep and r&b into the kind of song Marvin The Paranoid Android might have recorded if he were put on a course of anti-depressants, got laid by a washing machine and munched enough ecstasy tablets to explode a cat. Troubling, beautiful and strangely uplifting all at once, it states, simply and without the need for any of these words, that Angelides is a unique presence in electronic music.
