After releasing four albums on American label Plug Research and collaborating with emcees Busdriver and Radioinactive as "The Weather" on Mush recordings LA native Daedelus has signed up with London’s fastest growing record label Ninja Tune for a spring release.
His first outing on the label proves to be a modern day masterpiece laden with swirling strings, swing beats and guest vocalists a plenty. MF Doom sets the pace for the release with his unrivalled delivery style and lyrical elegance producing the albums stand out track, Impending Doom. It’s definitely the combination of strings and the power of the beat that make it such a example of quality but it is obvious to the ear that maybe it wouldn’t be such if Doom hadn’t have performed to his usual high standard.
Other vocal contributors, Sci, Cyne and Mike Ladd, add their own distinct blends of melodic hip hop, intelligent rhymes and introspective poetry respectively; with Big Dada favourites TTC adding their distinctly French rhyme patterns to Cadavre Exquis and singer Laura Darling creates a chilling shot of sorts providing classic vocals spun over a semi electrified piano loop on Now & Sleep; harking back to a time in music long forgotten where beautiful vocals sit contently amidst an orchestra of sounds.
The aspect of digging for the perfect sounds and loops provides the albums continuity as each song approaches your ears in the same understated manner uttering only a small portion of how truly engulfing this album can become. The resonance of the pianos combined with Daedelus’ exquisite execution of electronic drums and synths has created some of the most tranquil music to ever be called, ‘down-tempo’. His supreme command of distorted percussion is evident all the way through but makes a lasting impression on a number of tracks including The Crippled Hand, Fallen Love and Welcome Home which features Prefuse 73 on production duties.
A love of old cinematic music is ever present on the album and the mixture of textures and instruments exposes the depth of some of the more obvious stand out tracks, although, if you listen to the album as a whole its impossible to pick them out as listening ears are swept up in the progression that has encapsulated the album; providing an aural journey through Daedelus’ world of timeless loops and afro-Cuban percussion.
The soundscape Exquisite Corpse produces is full, lush and varied with introspective moments being analysed by guest lyricists and strong vocals being compromised by the distortion of the drum kits and the rich tapestry of instruments and samples.
Daedelus’ debut for Ninja Tune exposes a talent for collecting and utilising some of the more abstract samples and source materials. Exquisite Corpse proves to be a welcome breath of fresh air to lungs poisoned for far too long with mainstream electro. If you like your beats spun around a collection of timeless samples and emceeing that shouts actual credibility instead of "big pimping" then this is most definitely for you.
