Thursday8th, March Kid Koala continues his 90-city tour with North American dates for March and April |
| Kid Koala has always been a man "of the people". Sure he's shared the stage with acts as big as Radiohead & The Flaming Lips but that doesn't stop him from inviting people on stage and making himself available to meet the fans afterwards. Lest we forgot the "Private Party With Kid Koala" contest Ninja Tune ran a few years back around the release of "Some Of My Best Friends Are DJ's". Three lucky winners (one in Brighton, UK ; one in Toronto, Canada ; and one in Orlando, Florida) had the Kid come to their house to perform a private concert for them and their closest friends. He performed, gave DJ lessons, and left a full kit & P.A at each house. It's with that sort of attitude that Koala is embarking on this second phase of touring for "Your Mom's Favorite DJ" (released October last year) and taking his show outside the so-called "A-Markets". Let's face it though, in this day and age of internet reach everyplace is an a-market anyway and Koala's out to rock his fans in as many places as possible. We're talking about a guy who just got back from throwing it down to a big crowd in Whitehorse, Yukon. Look it up on a map if you need further proof that Koala will go to the far reaches to play for his fans. Check the show listings to see if Kid is coming to a city near you! |

| (taken from ninjatune.net) Ninja Tune is excited to announce that the latest from Kid Koala, Your Mom’s Favorite DJ is now available! Unofficially celebrating 10 years since the Scratchchratchratchatch cassette, it also hints at forthcoming projects (a book about a clarinet-playing mosquito and a musical puppet show). There is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at, and the enthralling deftness and complexity you’d expect from Kid Koala is also here, everything woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and rocking guitar jams. |

Thursday7th, September Ninja Tune and Piknik Electronik are proud to present : Kid Koala... Your Mom's Favorite DJ |
| On September 17th Ninja Tune is hosting the Piknic Electronik event at Place de L'homme in Parc Jean Drapeau. It has been on the Piknic show listing for a couple months now with the tag line "plus very special guest", and when we say special we mean special. So along with Ninja Tune Djs Ghostbeard and luv, and Ghislain Poirier (Rebondir Records), we are very happy to present a live DJ set from the one and only Kid Koala! The Kid will be unveiling his new masterpiece, 'Your Mom's Favorite DJ', at this, his album launch party (which is getting an advance release in Canada on Sept. 16th due to this event). Eric San a.k.a. Kid Koala is a one-of-a-kind sort of turntablist. There's the fact that he's an illustrator, graphic artist, filmmaker, puppet master and musician. There's the fact that he always wear shorts. Then there's the fact that he sees his chosen means of expression not as a way of showing that he can do faster crabs than anyone else, but as a way of telling stories. Although, on 'Your Mom's Favorite DJ', there is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at and even shake her booty to, the enthralling deftness and complexity you'd expect from Kid Koala is also here - woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and generous swathes of heavy guitars. It looks back to the seminal "Scratchcratchratchatch" cassette of a decade ago and the Ki''s first full release, "Scratch Happy Land" (as well as referencing his multimedia project "Nufonia Must Fall"). But it also, in ways we won't even explain yet, hints at the many projects Mr. San has to come. There are references throughout to a book about a clarinet-playing mosquito that Eric is currently working on, plus to the musical puppet show he has in development (honest). And there are also some "tests" from a new group called Slew. Parc (Jean Drapeau) on the 17th of September. |

Sunday6th, August KID KOALA'S NEW RECORD “YOUR MOM’S FAVORITE DJ” OUT ON NINJA TUNE THIS FALL |
| "I was never able to sing, I was never able to write songs. But I always got a kick out of piecing together stories with bits of records." Eric San aka Kid Koala is a one-of-a-kind sort of turntablist. There's the fact that he's an illustrator, graphic artist, film maker, puppet master and musician. There's the fact that he always wear shorts. Then there's the fact that he sees his chosen means of expression not as a way of showing that he can do faster crabs than anyone else, but as a way of telling stories. And here he is, with another story, a semi-autobiographical one, obviously, as it's undoubtedly true that if your mom had a favourite DJ, it would be Kid Koala. And if you want to take that as a snap, well then be our guest. This fresh-faced Kanadian Kasanova can play it however you like. Ma'am. Although there is the romance, silent movie comedy and swing that your mother may well smile at and even shake her booty to, the enthralling deftness and complexity you'd expect from Kid Koala is also here - woven together with classic hip hop beats, breaks and generous swathes of heavy guitars. It looks back to the seminal 'Scratchcratchratchatch' cassette of a decade ago and the Kid's first full release, 'Scratch Happy Land' (as well as referencing his multimedia project 'Nufonia Must Fall'). But it also, in ways we won't even explain yet, hints at the many projects Mr San has to come. There are references throughout to a book about a clarinet-playing mosquito that Eric is currently working on, plus to the musical puppet show he has in development (honest). And there are also some 'tests' from a new group called Slew. But don't worry too much about second-guessing stuff that will become clear later. Instead focus on the small but perfectly formed delights of 'Your Mom's Favorite DJ'. Try to follow the stories, headnod to the beats (Eric has always liked his beats), develop your own Charlie Chaplin routines, snigger at the vocal samples, marvel at the dextrousness of the vinyl manipulation, but most of all, enjoy the complete ease and class with which the whole thing is put together. |

Tuesday7th, March Lederhosen Lucil's track with Kid Koala released on Paperbag Records compilation |
| Once upon a time in a land far away three magical dwarves turning the cogs at Paper Bag Records, set to work creating something a little different amidst the foggy haze of indie rock. Avid music fans since birth, the dwarves decided to make a record that kids could listen to with their parents and in turn make all future, long car journeys a pleasure. Instead of releasing plastic, tacky, gimmicky, and not to mention annoying, ditties, Paper Bag Records has made something else See You On The Moon! is our offering to kids all over the world. We noticed that most of the time kids are far more intelligent than the adults surrounding them. We can only hope this peace offering of eclectic, new and exclusive tracks will do the trick! In return for simple, elf magic our friends Alan Sparhawk (of Low), Apostle of Hustle, Broken Social Scene, Detective Kalita, FemBots, Glissandro 70 (of Polmo Polpo), Great Lake Swimmers, Hot Chip, Junior Boys, Kid Koala with Lederhosen Lucil, Mark Kozelek (of Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters), Montag, Rosie Thomas and Sufjan Stevens all made very special tracks just for this project. Throwing condescension out the window and understanding the concept of fun without it being mindless or moronic - all the tracks will appeal to kids and grown ups alike. With See You On The Moon! pumping through sound systems worldwide, once the kids have forgiven us, we will all live happily ever after. 1. Alan Sparhawk - Be Nice to People With Lice 2. Tuesday10th, January Kid Koala rings in the new year for fans in Bermuda |
| On January 6, 2006, the Royal Gazette in Bermuda ran a story reflecting on the success of Kid Koala's New Year's Eve show in Bermuda. Below is an excerpt of the article, which features an interview with the two promoters that put together the show. Q: Who performed that night? Jon A: The Butcher (aka Phil Moffer), Chewstick Band and Colt 45, a new reggae DJ on the island. It was quite an impressive selection. We were interested to see how Bermuda would receive Kid Koala. He's quite eclectic and he's also very innovative. Reggae music is a guaranteed success here for obvious reasons. But someone who's going to completely do something new and different . . . Q: What does he do? Jon A: Basically, he plays turn tables like an instrument. Matt A: You know scratch DJing (as is used in) hip hop and things like that. But he's taken it further. He's creating a melody from mixing. Jon A: He makes his own music from samples of other music and plays four turntables at the same time. So he samples with noises that he makes from scratching a Louis Armstrong record and pulling out the horns. And then, a bass rhythm from a hip hop album. He uses the elements together and creates a whole new track with horns and hip hop beats and maybe a little piano or whatever. It's amazing to see his hands work because he's controlling four instruments at the same time. We had spy cameras hooked up to watch the turntables and then we projected two screens off the spy cameras so (guests) could see his hands working, which was very fascinating. It also helped explain what was happening because it sounded so good, you wouldn't even know. You'd think it was just a straight track he was playing. Matt A: There were people at that party who had seen him before. He'd opened for Jack Johnson recently and Ben Harper. But everyone people who'd never heard of him to people who had all his albums was impressed. Especially if they were a DJ they were impressed because he wasn't wearing headphones, which is unheard of with DJs mixing different tracks. It's unbelievable. Someone who doesn't DJ or have a knowledge of that would have been impressed by the speed, the arrangement of music. It was just an amazing sound. |

Wednesday2nd, June Kid Koala performs alongside 700 grade four students in the experimental Parade of Noises |
| (Text taken from official press release) On June 3rd, 2004, over 700 Grade 4 students participated in the second annual Parade of Noises at Brampton's Chinguacousy Park Bandshell. A unique noise orchestra of 700 grade 4 students performed using odd homemade musical instruments, such as whoopee cushion organs, Styrofoam guitars, homemade turntables, water chimes, clay ocarinas, and much more. The students enjoyed the opportunity of performing with some of the country's finest professional musicians, such as the renowned Montreal turntablist Kid Koala, children's entertainer Eric Nagler, The Singing Saw Symphony, the Kyoshi Nagata Taiko Ensemble, and much more. The Parade of Noises is the work of the experimental composer Richard Marsella, president of Music Roots Seminars Inc. "I started Music Roots to offer young students an alternative introduction to music. I want to share my musical approach with as many people as possible. I believe we can squeeze music out of just about anything!" Parents, teachers, and music enthusiasts were welcome to witness this extravaganza. The concert was recorded and CD manufactured for every participating student, so that they could enjoy and reflect upon this experience for many years to follow. Marsella explains, "The piece eventually grows to a grand culmination of sounds, where they conduct 2 ice cream trucks, and play a City of Brampton fire engine as a musical instrument. Everything was heard from kitchen sinks, and lawnmowers to Theremins and barrel organs being used for the purpose of providing an unforgettable music experience". Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer has been a great supporter of Mr. Marsella's work, and is strongly considering overseeing next year's Parade of Noises in the downtown core of Brampton. Marsella and Schafer are proposing to play Brampton itself as a musical instrument in June 2005, using the distinct make-up of the city to draw sounds from. Music Roots Seminars Inc. began as a pilot project in January 2003 in six public schools across the Peel Region and has expanded into 25 grade 4 classes since October 2003. The pilot year of the Music Roots program could not have been possible without the open-minded support of The Ontario Trillium Foundation, The City of Brampton, The Dufferin Peel School Board, DareArts Foundation for Kids, and the University of Toronto's Faculty |
